November 2009
HOSPICE OF LUBBOCK at 1102 Slide Road, Suite 3, is our featured volunteer station this month. The agency needs many volunteers both in a Support Role (office or Thrift Shop) or in Direct Patient Care. Hospice depends largely on volunteers to offer their special kind of care for the terminally ill. The care is designed to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their families, so that patients may die in peace and comfort at home with loved ones close by.
Patients may be admitted into Hospice care when there is a diagnosis of a terminal nature with limited life expectancy of approximately six months or less; there is consent of the primary physician; and a family member or friend is willing to serve as the primary caregiver.
Direct Care Volunteers work directly with patients once a week (set your own hours) and are thoroughly trained for this sensitive and important work. Training classes will be held in the fall.
Support Volunteers are especially needed by Hospice of Lubbock in the Thrift Shop adjacent to their offices. Because Hospice is available to all persons regardless of their financial status, unfunded or under funded patients can receive care through the monies raised by the shop. Volunteers dress manikins, arrange items for sale, take donations, and run the shop between the hours of 10-5, Monday through Saturday. Volunteers may also work from 8:30-5:00 assisting with clerical tasks, mailings, library, etc. in the Hospice office.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Meals on Wheels needs your help. Volunteers are needed to fill shifts at the “Easy as Pie” Fundraiser. This event is scheduled for November 14 – 21 at all nine Lubbock United Supermarket locations. Shifts can run 2, 3 or 4 hours in length. Volunteers are needed to sit at a table, receive donations and hand out coupons. Anyone making a $5 donation receives a coupon for a fresh-baked, 8-inch apple or pumpkin pie from United’s in-store bakery. If you are interested in being an “Easy as Pie” volunteer, please contact the RSVP office at 743-7787, and we will put you in contact with Meals on Wheels.
Remember: Today is a good day to volunteer!
