United We Serve
Capacity is strained in community organizations across the country, so Americans are encouraged to participate in service opportunities this summer and beyond. A call to summer service,
United We Serve, kicks off on Monday, June 22 and runs for 81 days through a new National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11. Let’s make volunteerism and community service part of our daily lives. While all types of volunteer service are encouraged,
United We Serve focuses on four key areas to strengthen our communities: education, health, energy/environment and community renewal. September 11 will be marked by volunteer service, remembrance activities and pledges to make service an ongoing commitment throughout the year.
Throughout the decades, we have changed our country. We have influenced national policy, left our mark on pop culture and changed our workplaces and families for the better. We are still active; we are still engaged, and now we have a great new opportunity to expand our influence. Through volunteering, we can be a positive influence on young lives, help older individuals remain independent in their own homes, clean up our community, offer our professional skills to local non-profit groups and lend our talents and experiences to strengthening Lubbock in countless other ways.
It’s time to get involved; join RSVP! You’ve gained a lifetime of experience. Continue to put your skills and talents to good use by volunteering through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over. When you join RSVP, you join nearly 500,000 volunteers across the country who are tackling tough issues in their communities. RSVP offers a full range of volunteer opportunities with thousands of local and national organizations. With RSVP, you choose how and where you want to serve. You choose the amount of time you want to give. And you choose whether you want to draw on your skills or develop new ones. In short, you find the opportunity that’s right for you. And remember: when you volunteer, you’re not just helping others, you’re helping yourself. Studies show that volunteering helps you live longer, and it promotes a positive outlook on life.
